“A desire to embrace complete creativity sprung forth becoming a
personal reflection inside the world of forms and color around us.
I do not know what I am saying while I apply paint to the canvas.
It is like a foreign language until I realize it is finished.
Then the study begins.” J. M. Snyder, 2005
A native of Penn Yan, NY, a small town in the beautiful Finger Lakes, Joyce Mallory Snyder (J. M. Snyder) graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) School of Art and Design in 1953. Upon graduation she married Irving M. Snyder from Rochester, NY, and moved to Corning, NY, home of the famous Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG) and Corning's Gaffer District .
She began her career designing note cards, calendars and other publicity materials for local city merchants, teaching art classes for adults and children, and rendering detailed drawings of landmarks and private homes. Most notable were her pen and ink drawings for Corning, Inc. and other local institutions. Snyder eventually expanded her repertoire to include pen and ink drawings of residences, charcoal and pastel portraits of family pets and farm animals. She donated proceeds from the pet portraits to the Finger Lakes SPCA and Animal Farm Sanctuary.
Years later Snyder set off on a new path - the ABSTRACT. She exhibited in San Diego, Corning and Penn Yan. Snyder also won several online juried abstract art competitions.
J. M. Snyder passed away in February 2013, but through her art her inspiration lives on!
